The Benefits of Hot Yoga: The Inspiring Story Behind Idolem

Chronicle 1 - The Story Behind Idolem: How Yoga Changed a Life

In this first chronicle, Mélody Benhamou shares how hot yoga transformed her life after an injury and led her to found Idolem. She talks about the company’s mission: creating a space where everyone can slow down, reconnect with themselves, and take care of their well-being. She also reminds us that yoga is accessible to everyone and can have a lasting impact on physical and mental health.

An injury, a revelation… and a mission that is transforming the lives of thousands of Quebecers today.

When people discover Idolem for the first time, they often think of a simple hot yoga studio. But behind every class lies a much bigger story, that of a company born from a desire to help people feel better, both physically and mentally.

That story begins with its founder, Mélody Benhamou.

When an Injury Becomes an Opportunity

Before founding Idolem, Mélody was a high-level beach volleyball athlete.

After a lower back sprain, she thought she would have to slow down, maybe even give up part of what she loved.

A friend suggested she try a hot yoga class. Her answer was immediate: “Yoga? That’s not for me, I’m an athlete.”

She agreed to go anyway. That first class completely changed her view of yoga.

The next day, her back pain had noticeably eased. But what struck her most wasn’t just the physical relief, it was that feeling, so rare in our modern lives, of finally being able to breathe, slow down, and be fully present.

That’s when she understood that yoga isn’t just a physical activity. It’s a true wellness tool.

Her experience is far from unique: the scientific community recognizes that yoga is effective for relieving back pain, especially in cases of lower back sprains like hers.

The Benefits of Hot Yoga Go Well Beyond Flexibility

Many people still believe yoga is only for flexible people. In reality, flexibility is usually a result of practice, not a requirement to start.

Hot yoga offers many benefits, including:

  • Improving mobility and posture
  • Building strength, balance, and stability
  • Supporting post-workout recovery
  • Reducing muscle tension
  • Relieving stress and anxiety
  • Improving focus
  • Offering a moment to reconnect with yourself

For Mélody, it’s this combination of body and mind that makes all the difference.

Why Do Athletes Practice Yoga Too?

Contrary to popular belief, yoga is now part of many athletes’ training routines. At Idolem, it’s not unusual to see hockey players, skaters, runners, weightlifters, and elite athletes on the mat.

Yoga helps them improve their mobility, prevent certain injuries, and recover better between workouts, a topic we explore further in this article on hot yoga and athletic recovery.

But athletes are far from the only ones walking through a studio’s doors.

Yoga Is Truly Accessible to Everyone

One of Idolem’s biggest missions is making yoga accessible. No matter your age, fitness level, or experience, everyone practices at their own pace.

If your body needs a break, you take a break. If you want to modify a pose, you modify it.

What matters is never performance. What matters is listening to yourself.

An Experience Designed to Help You Unplug

At Idolem, everything is designed to help you reconnect with yourself. The rooms are deliberately dimly lit, because it’s much easier to let go of comparison when you stop watching what everyone else is doing.

For one hour, there’s nothing to prove. Just a moment to breathe, move, and reconnect with yourself.

More Than a Network of Yoga Studios

Today, Idolem has nearly 40 studios across Quebec. But despite this growth, the mission remains the same as it was on day one: to create spaces where everyone can slow down, take care of their body, and find lasting balance.

Because at its core, yoga isn’t just a practice. It’s a way of living better.
